Eight Tunisia excursions, one private car each
All our Tunisia excursions work the same way: an air-conditioned car or van, only your group on board, and a driver who waits at every stop. What changes is the scenery. Here is what each route shows you and who it suits best.
The capital in one day: the covered souks of the medina in the morning, the Antonine Baths of Carthage beside the sea around midday, then coffee on the cliff at Sidi Bou Said. For a first trip to Tunisia, this is where to start.
Medina of Tunis, Carthage, Sidi Bou Said7h door to door
Carthage and the white and blue village without the medina, with you back at the hotel by early afternoon. A good fit for the day after you land, or when the beach is calling.
Two UNESCO sites on one road: the Great Mosque of Kairouan, founded in 670, then the amphitheatre of El Jem, where you can still walk the passages under the arena floor. If you only take one long trip, take this one.
Short drives and long walks on the Sahel coast: the marina of Port El Kantaoui, the walled medina and ribat of Sousse, then the seafront fortress of Monastir. Ideal with children, or after a long trip earlier in the week.
Port El Kantaoui, Sousse, Monastir6h30 door to door
The green peninsula north of Hammamet, coast to coast: Kelibia fort above a turquoise bay, the sea cliffs and ancient quarries of El Haouaria, and the hot springs of Korbous. Pack a swimsuit.
Our longest drive, two and a half hours from Hammamet, for a whole Roman town on a hillside, which UNESCO calls the best preserved small Roman town in North Africa, and the underground villas of Bulla Regia with their mosaics in place. Take the 08:00 start.
Inland to the mountain that once supplied Carthage with water: the abandoned Berber village of Zriba Olia on its ridge, the white lanes of Zaghouan and the Roman Water Temple at the spring. Wear shoes that grip on stone paths.

Half a day at the wildlife park near Bouficha, half an hour from Hammamet: lions, giraffes, elephants and flamingos at your own pace. You are back at the hotel for lunch with the afternoon free.

How far each trip goes from your hotel
Kilometres say little here; driving time says more. Friguia Park is half an hour from Hammamet, Dougga two and a half hours. Pick your pickup town and the routes rearrange around it. For a closer look at the roads from one resort, read our guide to day trips from Hammamet.
Each ring is 30 minutes of driving to the first stop. Directions are as the crow flies.
What a day out costs when you share the car
We price the vehicle, not the seat. The fare covers the car or van, the driver, fuel, tolls and parking, so it stays the same whether two or four of you ride. Pick a route and a pickup town to see what it comes to per person.

Fitting two or three trips into one week
Most guests stay a week and go out two or three times. What works: never two long days back to back, the longest drive early in the stay, and the last full day kept free. Three ways to space them:
First week: the two classics
Carthage and Sidi Bou Said early on, El Jem near the end, beach days around both.
What travellers ask us before choosing a route. More answers on the questions page.
01
Which excursion suits a family with young children?
Friguia Park is the easy one: half an hour from Hammamet and back for lunch. Sousse and Monastir also works well, with short drives and plenty of time on foot. Child seats are free on request.
02
Can we see the Sahara on a day trip?
Not comfortably. The dunes around Douz are five hours or more by road from Hammamet, so desert tours from the coast take two days with a night in a camp. We only run day trips, and El Jem is as far south as we go.
03
Is a hotel coach excursion cheaper?
For one or two people, a coach seat usually costs less. We charge per car, so from three or four travellers the gap narrows quickly, and the vehicle and the timing are yours alone.
04
How many excursions can we fit into one week?
Two or three is comfortable. Leave a beach day between two long trips such as El Jem and Dougga, and keep the shorter ones for days when you want to be back early. You can book them all at once or one by one during your stay.
05
What should we wear and bring?
Comfortable shoes, a hat and water for the open sites. At the Great Mosque of Kairouan and the Zitouna mosque in Tunis everyone covers shoulders and knees, so a light scarf in the bag saves time. Bring cash in dinars for the tickets.
06
When do we pay, and what if our plans change?
You pay the driver at the end of the day, in euros or dinars. There is no deposit and no card. Cancelling or moving the date is free up to 48 hours before pickup.
07
Which UNESCO sites can we reach in a day?
Tunisia has nine World Heritage sites, and six of them sit on our routes: Carthage, the medinas of Tunis and Sousse, Kairouan, El Jem and Dougga. Our guide to UNESCO sites in Tunisia covers all nine, with 2026 ticket prices.
