Updated October 2026 · 8 min read
The best day trips from Hammamet reach Tunis, Carthage and Sidi Bou Said in about an hour, Cap Bon in an hour, and El Jem in an hour and a half. Hammamet sits at the hinge between the north and the Sahel, so almost every major sight in the country is a comfortable day out. This guide lists all eight, with the 2026 price per car and who each one suits.

Heading north: Tunis, Carthage and Sidi Bou Said
The trip to Tunis, Carthage and Sidi Bou Said is the one most people choose first, and for good reason. The motorway gets you to the capital in about an hour, and you see three very different places in one day: a medina still used for daily shopping, the Roman ruins of Carthage on the sea, and the blue and white village above the bay.

If you only want the photogenic part, the half day to Sidi Bou Said gets you back for a late lunch at the hotel. Our guide to Sidi Bou Said and Carthage in one day explains what to see at each stop and in which order.
Cap Bon: the peninsula on your doorstep
Cap Bon starts where Hammamet ends, so it is the shortest scenic drive you can take. The day follows the coast to the Byzantine fort of Kelibia, the Roman quarry caves of El Haouaria at the tip of the peninsula, and the cliffs and hot springs of Korbous on the far side.

Bring a swimsuit from June to October: the water around Kelibia is some of the clearest on the coast. Our guide to Cap Bon covers each stop in detail.
Heading south: El Jem, Kairouan, Sousse and Monastir
South of Hammamet the motorway runs to the Sahel, the coast of Sousse and Monastir, and inland to El Jem and Kairouan. El Jem is the long day here at about an hour and a half each way, and it is the one visitors talk about afterwards.

The amphitheatre of El Jem is the best-preserved Roman arena in Africa, and you can walk its tunnels and climb to the top tier. Read our El Jem amphitheatre guide before you go. Sousse and Monastir make an easier day, with two ribats, the medina of Sousse and the marina of Port El Kantaoui.
Inland: Zaghouan, Zriba Olia, Dougga and Bulla Regia
Inland trips trade the sea for mountains and wheat fields. Zaghouan, 45 minutes away, has the Roman Water Temple that fed Carthage's aqueduct and the abandoned stone village of Zriba Olia. Dougga is the longest day, about two and a half hours each way, and the most complete Roman town in North Africa.

What are the best day trips from Hammamet with children?
Choose short drives and places where children can climb or watch animals. These three work best for families staying in Hammamet.
Friguia Park, about 30 minutes away, with lions, giraffes, elephants and flamingos; you are back for lunch
Sousse and Monastir, with two fortress towers to climb and boats to watch in the marina
El Jem, where children can run through the underground corridors of the arena (a long drive, so pack snacks)
Child seats are fitted free on request. Tell us the ages when you book.
How to plan a week of day trips from Hammamet
Mix one long day with one short day, and leave a beach day between them. A week built this way covers the highlights without anyone tiring of the car.
Day 2: Tunis, Carthage and Sidi Bou Said
The capital first, while you are fresh. About an hour each way.
Day 4: El Jem and Kairouan
Leave at 08:00 to reach the Great Mosque of Kairouan before it closes to visitors in the early afternoon.
Day 6: Cap Bon or Zaghouan
A shorter, quieter day near Hammamet, with a swim at Kelibia in summer.
