North-west Tunisia
Dougga and Bulla Regia tour
This Dougga and Bulla Regia tour takes you to the two finest Roman towns in the green hills of north-west Tunisia: Dougga, on the UNESCO list since 1997, and Bulla Regia, where the Romans built their houses underground. It is the longest of our days, and for many travellers the most memorable.

Rome in the hills, away from the crowds
A Dougga and Bulla Regia tour is rarely sold at hotel desks because the drive is long, which is exactly why the sites feel so quiet. Leave at 08:00 and you walk Dougga's streets in the morning, eat in the hills, and reach Bulla Regia in the afternoon. The times below are for a pickup in Hammamet.
Your Dougga and Bulla Regia tour, stop by stop
Dougga needs the most time, so it comes first. Bulla Regia, smaller and partly underground, is perfect for the warmer hours of the afternoon.

Stop 1
Dougga
Dougga is often called the best preserved Roman town in North Africa. Its Capitol, built around 166 AD, still stands to its full height on a hillside of olive trees, and its theatre seated 3,500 people.

Stop 2
Bulla Regia
To escape the summer heat, the wealthy families of Bulla Regia built a second floor beneath their villas. You walk down into rooms that still have their mosaic floors in place.

Tips
Good to know before you go
This day is long and mostly outdoors.
Take the 08:00 start
Door to door the day lasts close to ten hours. Leaving at 08:00 gives you time at both sites and a relaxed lunch.
Shoes for uneven ground
Dougga spreads over a hillside with original Roman paving. Good soles and a hat make the visit far more pleasant.
Spring is the best season
From March to May the hills are green and full of wild flowers. In summer, start early and save Bulla Regia's cool underground rooms for the afternoon.
The route from your hotel
From Hammamet the drive to Dougga takes about two and a half hours, most of it on the motorway towards Béja. Bulla Regia lies further west, near Jendouba.
