Rocky coastline and sea at El Haouaria on Cap Bon

Cap Bon

Cap Bon tour

This Cap Bon tour follows the peninsula north of Hammamet from coast to coast in one private day: the hilltop fortress of Kelibia, the cliffs and ancient quarries of El Haouaria, and the hot springs of Korbous that run straight into the sea. It is the day for landscapes rather than monuments.

The green peninsula, coast to coast

A Cap Bon tour by coach usually squeezes in a pottery shop or two. With your own driver you follow the coast instead: east to Kelibia, round the tip of the peninsula at El Haouaria, and back along the gulf of Tunis to Korbous. The times below are for a pickup in Hammamet.

Your Cap Bon tour, stop by stop

The loop runs clockwise, so you see the open Mediterranean in the morning and the gulf of Tunis in the afternoon light.

  1. Pickup at your hotel

Hammamet, Sousse, Port El Kantaoui or Tunis, from your hotel or Airbnb

  2. 1h on the road

  3. 1
Old cannon on the walls of Kelibia fortress above the sea

    Stop 1

    Kelibia

Kelibia's fortress sits on a rock some 150 metres above the town. It began as a Punic stronghold and was rebuilt by the Byzantines, the Spanish and the Ottomans, each leaving their walls.

    • The ramparts and cannons of the fortress

    • The view over the fishing port and the beach of Mansourah

    • Kerkouane, a Punic town listed by UNESCO, ten minutes away on request

  4. 30 min on the road

  5. 2
    Rocky coastline at El Haouaria

    Stop 2

    El Haouaria

At the tip of the peninsula, the cliffs of El Haouaria hide caves that are in fact ancient quarries. Stone for Carthage was cut here and shipped across the gulf.

    • The Punic and Roman quarries, cut into the sea cliff

    • The headland and its view towards the island of Zembra

    • Fresh fish in the village restaurants

  6. 30 min on the road

  7. 3
White houses of Korbous between the cliff and the sea

    Stop 3

    Korbous

The Romans already bathed at Korbous. Its springs are hot enough to steam, and at Ain el Atrous the water pours from the rock directly into the sea, where people sit in the warm current.

    • Ain el Atrous, where the hot spring meets the sea

    • The white village wedged between cliff and shore

    • The coast road with views over the gulf of Tunis

  8. 1h on the road

  9. Back at your hotel

Drop off at your hotel around 18:00.

Good to know before you go

This is an outdoor day, so a little preparation helps.

Pack a swimsuit and a towel

The warm water at Ain el Atrous is the highlight for many people, and the beaches near Kelibia are some of the clearest in the country.

Wind on the headland

El Haouaria is exposed even in summer. A light layer makes the cliff walk more pleasant.

Lunch on fish

Kelibia and El Haouaria live from the sea. Grilled fish and brik are the obvious lunch, at prices well below the resorts.

The route from your hotel

From Hammamet it is about an hour to Kelibia. The loop then follows the coast round the peninsula and returns through Soliman.
