Zaghouan mountains

Zaghouan and Zriba Olia tour

This Zaghouan and Zriba Olia tour heads inland to the mountain that once watered Carthage: the abandoned Berber village of Zriba Olia on its stone ridge, the white town of Zaghouan, and the Roman Water Temple at the source of a 132-kilometre aqueduct. It is a short drive from the coast and a different Tunisia.

Mountains, springs and a ghost village

Few visitors make the Zaghouan and Zriba Olia tour, which is the point: you walk through a village of stone houses with only the wind for company. The roads are short and quiet, so the day ends early enough for an afternoon by the pool. The times below are for a pickup in Hammamet.

Your Zaghouan and Zriba Olia tour, stop by stop

The village comes first, in the cool of the morning. The town and the temple follow, with lunch in between.

    Zriba Olia

The old Berber village of Zriba Olia clings to a rocky ridge above the plain. Its families moved to the new village below during the last century, leaving the stone houses, the mosque and the lanes behind.

    • The stone lanes and roofless houses of the old village

    • The small mosque with its square minaret

    • The view over the plain towards the Zaghouan mountain

Zaghouan is a white town at the foot of its 1,295-metre mountain, known for its spring water, its almond pastries and the eglantine rose distilled here.

    • The old town and its Roman gate

    • Kaak warka, the town's ring-shaped almond pastry

    • Views of the Djebel Zaghouan above the rooftops

    Water Temple

Built around 130 AD, in Hadrian's time, the Water Temple is a monumental fountain at the spring that fed Carthage. From here an aqueduct carried water about 90 kilometres to the city, 132 with its channels.

    • The horseshoe of niches around the old spring

    • The basin and the start of the aqueduct

    • Arches of the aqueduct along the road back towards Tunis

Good to know before you go

A few practical points for this inland day.

Good shoes for the village

Zriba Olia's lanes are rocky and uneven. Closed shoes are much better than sandals.

Cooler than the coast

The Zaghouan area is often a few degrees cooler than Hammamet, which makes it a good choice on a hot summer day.

Take home kaak warka

The pastry shops of Zaghouan sell boxes of kaak warka that travel well. It makes a better souvenir than most things in the souks.

The route from your hotel

From Hammamet the road reaches Zriba Olia in about forty-five minutes. Zaghouan town and its temple are fifteen minutes further on.
