Three sights, one unhurried day

A Tunis, Carthage and Sidi Bou Said tour on a coach usually means short stops and a fixed lunch. With your own car the order follows the light: the medina in the cool of the morning, Carthage at midday, and Sidi Bou Said last, once the tour groups have left. The times below are for a pickup in Hammamet.

Your Tunis, Carthage and Sidi Bou Said tour, stop by stop

Each stop lasts about an hour and a half, and the three are close together, so less of the day is spent in the car.

  1. Pickup at your hotel

Hammamet, Sousse, Port El Kantaoui or Tunis, from your hotel or Airbnb

  2. 1h on the road

  3. 1
Arched gate into the souks of the medina of Tunis

    Stop 1

    Medina of Tunis

The old town has been on the UNESCO list since 1979. Its covered souks are organised by trade, and the Zitouna mosque sits at their centre. Your driver drops you at the main gate and meets you on the other side.

    • The Zitouna mosque, whose courtyard is open to visitors on weekday mornings

    • Souk el Attarine for perfumes and the chechia makers' souk for red felt caps

    • Bab el Bhar, the sea gate, and Avenue Habib Bourguiba beyond it

  4. 15 min on the road

  5. 2
Ruins of the Antonine Baths at Carthage by the sea

    Stop 2

    Carthage

Little of Punic Carthage stood after Rome took the city in 146 BC, but the Roman town that followed left huge remains. One ticket covers the scattered sites, so your driver takes you from one to the next.

    • The Antonine Baths, the largest Roman baths in Africa, right on the shore

    • Byrsa hill and its museum, with the view over the bay of Tunis

    • The Punic ports and the Tophet sanctuary

  6. 15 min on the road

  7. 3
Stepped alley with blue doors in Sidi Bou Said

    Stop 3

    Sidi Bou Said

Since a 1915 decree the village has kept its white walls and blue woodwork. Walk up the main lane to the café terraces above the gulf, then lose the crowds in the side streets.

    • The terraces of Café des Délices over the gulf of Tunis

    • Dar Ennejma Ezzahra, the palace of Baron d'Erlanger

    • Bambalouni, the fried doughnut sold hot on the main lane

  8. 1h on the road

  9. Back at your hotel

Drop off at your hotel around 18:00.

Good to know before you go

A few details make the day smoother.

Keep your Carthage ticket

One ticket opens all the Carthage sites on the same day, and you show it at each entrance. Keep it handy rather than at the bottom of a bag.

Haggle with a smile in the souks

Prices in the medina are a starting point. Agree a price before anything is wrapped, and walk on politely if it does not suit you.

Comfortable shoes

Expect three to four kilometres on foot, on medina cobbles, gravel paths at Carthage and steep lanes in Sidi Bou Said.

The route from your hotel

From Hammamet the motorway reaches Tunis in about an hour. The medina, Carthage and Sidi Bou Said lie within twenty kilometres of each other along the coast road.
