This Sousse and Monastir tour strings together three faces of the Sahel coast in one easy private day: the marina of Port El Kantaoui, the walled medina of Sousse and the seafront fortress of Monastir. The drives are short, so most of the day is spent on foot rather than in the car.

The coast's history, minutes apart

The three stops of the Sousse and Monastir tour are less than half an hour from one another, which makes this the gentlest day of the seven. It suits families, first days in Tunisia and anyone staying in Sousse who wants to see the town properly. The times below are for a pickup in Hammamet.

Your Sousse and Monastir tour, stop by stop

The day starts with a stroll at the marina, spends the late morning in Sousse and ends at Monastir's ribat in the early afternoon.

    Port El Kantaoui

Built in the late 1970s around a yacht harbour, Port El Kantaoui is the Sahel's showpiece resort: white arcades, cafés on the quay and boats heading out along the coast.

    • The marina and its quayside cafés

    • The replica galleon moored in the harbour

    • A coffee with a view before the crowds arrive

    Sousse

The medina of Sousse has been on the UNESCO list since 1988 for its early Islamic buildings. Climb the watchtower of the ribat for the view, then visit the Kasbah museum, home to one of the country's finest mosaic collections.

    • The Ribat and the climb up its round watchtower

    • The Great Mosque, seen from its courtyard

    • The archaeological museum in the Kasbah and its Roman mosaics

    Stop 3

    Monastir

The Ribat of Monastir was founded in 796 to guard the shore, and its walls still drop straight to the sea. Next to it stands the marble mausoleum of Habib Bourguiba, the country's first president.

    • The ramparts and watchtower of the Ribat

    • The Bourguiba mausoleum and its two minarets

    • The seafront promenade and the old fishing port

Good to know before you go

Small things that make this coastal day better.

Climb the towers early

The staircases of both ribats are narrow and get busy around midday. Going up first, before the shopping, keeps the climb pleasant.

Lunch by the sea

Grilled fish in Monastir's old port or a terrace in Port El Kantaoui both work well. Your driver can suggest a place for your budget.

An easy day for children

Short drives and open spaces make this the trip we suggest for families with young children. Ask for a child seat when booking.

The route from your hotel

From Hammamet the motorway reaches Port El Kantaoui in about half an hour. Sousse is next door, and Monastir twenty kilometres further south.
