Things to do in Cap Bon: Kelibia, El Haouaria and Korbous
Updated October 2026 · 7 min read
The top things to do in Cap Bon are climbing to Kelibia fort, walking into the Roman quarry caves at El Haouaria, swimming off Kelibia's beaches and soaking in the hot springs of Korbous. The peninsula starts at Hammamet and is about 80 km long, so one full day takes in its three best stops.

What is Cap Bon, and is it worth a day?
Cap Bon is the peninsula pointing towards Sicily, in the north east of Tunisia. It is worth a day if you like coastlines, small towns and swimming more than big monuments. It is greener than the rest of the coast, with citrus orchards, vineyards and fishing ports.
| Stop | What you do | Time to allow |
|---|---|---|
| Kelibia | Fort, harbour, beach, grilled fish | 2 hours |
| El Haouaria | Roman quarry caves, cliffs, view of Zembra island | 1 h 30 |
| Korbous | Cliff village, hot spring flowing into the sea | 1 hour |
| Kerkouane (optional) | UNESCO Punic town near Kelibia | 1 hour, ask us |
Kelibia: the fort and the clearest water on the coast
Kelibia's fort sits on a rocky hill above the harbour, and the climb takes ten minutes. The walls date mostly from the Byzantine period and later Arab and Spanish rebuilds, on a site that was the Punic town of Aspis.

Below the fort, the beach of El Mansourah has the calm, clear water that Kelibia is known for. The harbour is one of the busiest fishing ports in Tunisia, so lunch here means grilled fish straight from the boats. Kelibia is also known for its dry muscat wine.
El Haouaria: the Roman caves at the tip of Cap Bon
At the very tip of Cap Bon, the Romans and Carthaginians quarried the sandstone used to build Carthage. The result is a series of huge pyramid-shaped caves opening onto the sea, known as Ghar El Kebir.
The quarries: walk inside the caves and look up at the light holes cut in the roof. Cool even in August.
The cliffs: the coast drops straight into deep blue water, with Zembra island on the horizon.
Falconry: El Haouaria is famous for training sparrowhawks and falcons; a festival is held in early summer.
Birds: in spring, thousands of raptors cross here between Africa and Europe.
Korbous: hot springs running into the sea
Korbous is a small spa village squeezed between the mountain and the Gulf of Tunis, on the western side of the peninsula. Its hot springs have been used since Roman times.

Just outside the village, at Ain El Atrous, a hot spring at around 50°C pours straight into the sea. Locals sit in the rocks where hot and cold water mix. Bring a swimsuit and something to sit on.

A loop is the easiest way: down the east coast to Kelibia, across the tip to El Haouaria, and back along the west coast past Korbous. A car is essential; public transport between these towns is slow.

Our Cap Bon day costs €90 per car from Hammamet (1 to 4 people) in 2026, with about an hour to the first stop. From Sousse, Port El Kantaoui and Tunis it is €130. The other options nearby are in our list of day trips from Hammamet.
