The El Jem amphitheatre is a Roman arena built around 238 AD that once held about 35,000 people, and it is the best-preserved amphitheatre in Africa. You can walk its underground corridors and climb to the upper tiers. Allow 90 minutes, add the museum, and expect to pay 30 TND in 2026.

Why is the El Jem amphitheatre so famous?
Because it is huge, intact and almost empty. The El Jem amphitheatre stands in the middle of a small town, rising higher than every building around it, and you can still walk most of it. Compared with the Colosseum in Rome, you get similar scale with a fraction of the crowd.
| Fact | El Jem |
|---|---|
| Built | Around 238 AD, in the Roman town of Thysdrus |
| Capacity | About 35,000 spectators |
| Size | About 148 m by 122 m |
| Ranking | Among the largest Roman amphitheatres ever built |
| UNESCO | World Heritage Site since 1979 |
| Ticket 2026 | 30 TND (45 TND from January 2027), museum included |
Thysdrus grew rich on olive oil, which explains why a market town could afford an arena on this scale. According to UNESCO, the building was probably never fully finished.
What to see inside the El Jem amphitheatre
Walk it in three levels: underneath, at arena level and at the top. Each one shows you something different.
The underground galleries: two vaulted corridors under the arena floor where animals and fighters waited. Lifts raised cages through openings in the floor; you can still see the shafts.
The arena: stand in the middle and look up. The acoustics carry a normal speaking voice to the tiers, which is why the summer music festival works here.
The upper tiers: stairs lead to the top galleries. The view takes in the whole oval and the town beyond, and it is where most of the good photos come from.
The breach on the west side: the missing section of wall was blown open by cannon in the 17th century, when rebels used the building as a fortress.
Is the El Jem museum worth it?
Yes, and the ticket already includes it. The archaeological museum, a short walk south of the amphitheatre, holds some of the finest Roman mosaics in Tunisia, many found in the villas of Thysdrus.

Behind the museum you can walk through the House of Africa, a Roman villa reconstructed with its mosaics in place, and the remains of a smaller, earlier amphitheatre. Allow 45 minutes for the whole museum area.
When to visit the El Jem amphitheatre
Arrive early in the morning or after 15:00. The stone holds the heat from late morning, there is little shade inside, and tour coaches tend to arrive around 11:00.
| Season | What to expect |

| March to May | Ideal: mild, green fields around the town, few crowds |
| June to August | Hot by 11:00. Go early. The El Jem symphonic music festival fills the arena on summer evenings |
| September to October | Warm and calm; a very good time |
| November to February | Cool and often quiet; bring a layer for the windy upper tiers |
How to get to El Jem from the coast
El Jem lies about 65 km south of Sousse, just off the motorway, so it is a day trip from every resort. A private car lets you combine it with Kairouan, the holy city, 90 minutes away, in the same day.
| From | Drive to El Jem | El Jem and Kairouan, per car (1 to 4) |
|---|---|---|
| Sousse or Port El Kantaoui | About 1 h 15 | €100 |
| Hammamet | About 1 h 30 | €90 |
| Tunis | About 2 h 30 | €130 |
Louages (shared minibuses) and trains also reach El Jem, but you cannot easily add Kairouan the same day. On our El Jem and Kairouan day the driver usually visits Kairouan first, because the Great Mosque closes to visitors in the early afternoon.
